De Pas, D’Urbino, Lomazzi - Sambonet

Jonathan De Pas (Milan 1932 - 1991), Donato D’Urbino (Milan 1936) and Paolo Lomazzi (Milan 1936) are involved in the fields of architecture, interiors, exhibitions and design, and are collectively noted for their ironic perspective and the use of innovative technologies and materials. De Pas and D’Urbino graduated in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano in 1959 and 1960 respectively. De Pas began his career with Marcello Nizzoli, while D’Urbino started with Augusto Magnaghi and Mario Terzaghi. Lomazzi studied at the Athenaeum in Lausanne, where he met Alberto Sartoris, later taking an internship at the BBPR studio in Milan. The partnership between the three designers took shape in 1966. Their most notable works include the inflatable armchair “Blow”, the “Joe” armchair and the “Sciangai” coat-hanger, for which they were awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1979. Following the early death of De Pas in 1991, D’Urbino and Lomazzi continued their partnership, and are still in activity today.

Roberto Sambonet (Vercelli 1924 - Milan 1995) was a painter, designer of objects and fabrics, an internal designer, and an organiser of exhibitions as well as working in graphics; he was conspicuous for his technical capabilities and the refinement and simplicity in his use of form. He studied architecture at the Politecnico di Milano and between 1948 and 1953 he spent time in Brazil, where he painted and worked with Pier Maria Bardi. From 1953, after a brief collaboration with Alvar Aalto, he worked as a designer for his family company, introducing a number of innovations, including the famous steel Pesciera (fish kettle), for which he was awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1970. Together with Bruno Munari, Bob Noorda and Pino Tovaglia he participated in the design of the emblem for the Lombardy Region in 1974. His career as a painter included a series of portraits of friends and public figures from the world of culture.
